Men's Senior County 2010 |
With Nottinghamshire dropping out Shropshire’s pool was reduced to four teams; along with the hosts Cheshire they were up against Yorkshire and Norfolk. This avoided the fear of relegation but the challenge to get to the finals for the third year running was going to be no easier with Cheshire having won the title the last two years and Yorkshire having beaten Shropshire in the semis, again for the last two years.
Shropshire fought back from 2-0 down to level the scores in this game and were very relieved when at the final hooter a Yorkshire shot was adjudged to have crossed the goal line after the hooter, leaving the score at 2-2. With no penalty flicks or extra time Shropshire this year at least avoided a defeat by Yorkshire.

Sat 22 - Cheshire 7-0 Shropshire |
Having earlier beaten Norfolk Cheshire, bolstered by the arrival of some of their stronger players, proved too strong for Shropshire and ran in seven goals. In the other game played on Saturday Norfolk too held Yorkshire to a 2-2 draw.
This left Shropshire in a promising situation. If they could beat Norfolk and then Cheshire beat Yorkshire, which they ought to do, it would leave Shropshire in second place and into the finals again.

Sun 23 - Norfolk 2-6 Shropshire |
Shropshire turned on the style against Norfolk who were no push-over. A 3-0 score line at half time settled a few nerves and a fourth goal at the start of the second half helped even more. Norfolk kept pressing but Shropshire were able to maintain their lead for a morale boosting victory. So now it was all on the last game and it went to form with Cheshire beating Yorkshire 4-1.
So Shropshire make the finals for the third year running but whoever they face in the semi it will not be Yorkshire again, nor Cheshire who won this pool. The finals are on 6th June at Abbeydale, Sheffield.
