Shrewsbury
3-1 Bridgnorth
Shrewsbury
went into half time 1-0 up
thanks to a Matt Sillence goal from open play. He added a second soon after the
restart before Danny Wright pulled one back for Bridgnorth. Tim Andrews restored
Shrewsbury
’s two goal cushion as they
turned the tables on their higher ranked opponents and set up a repeat of last
years final.
Telford
& Wrekin 7-1 Whitchurch
In
a scrappy first half Alex Johnson’s strike on 10 minutes for
Telford
and Wrekin was cancelled out
by a Luke Davies deflection from a well worked penalty corner for Whitchurch
just on half time. But in the second half
Telford
stepped up the pace and
rattled in six unanswered goals from Peter Evans, a brace from Jon Heath, Simon
Taylor and a pair from Dave Tracey.
3/4
playoff - Bridgnorth 3-1 Whitchurch
In
a repeat of last year Bridgnorth again came out on top winning 3-1. Their goals
came from Kevin Thomas, Paul Merrick and captain James Childs. Whitchurch
captain Dale Seymour scored their goal.
Final
-
Shrewsbury
3-4
Telford
& Wrekin
In
a repeat of last years final youngster Geoff Purnell scored his first goal for
Telford & Wrekin with a deft touch in at the far post from a penalty corner
after 5 minutes. But
Shrewsbury
were not daunted by their
opponents and kept themselves in the game with a similar Matt Sillence touch in
from a penalty corner of their own. They continued to thwart Telford &
Wrekin and had a few breakaway chances of their own but the game was evenly
poised at 1-1 at half time.
In
the second period Telford & Wrekin again stepped up a gear and opened up a
three goal lead. The first was from a nice switch on a penalty corner, finished
with a smooth drag flick from Alex Johnson. With
Shrewsbury
pressing for an equaliser
they were caught by a break from Jon Heath who, having drawn the keeper,
selflessly slipped the ball left for Alex Johnson to tap in. Dave Tracey scored
Telford’s fourth with a rasping reverse stick shot from the top of the D. That
should have been that but
Shrewsbury
pulled
the score back to 4-3 first with a penalty corner strike from Lyndon Boyden and
then a Jon Davis penalty flick. This made for an interesting last couple of
minutes but Telford & Wrekin stood firm to retain the Shropshire Star Cup.
